Question: How significant of an impact do you think “social networking” has had on relationships/marriages?
Do you think social networking, the internet in general and text messaging have had an overall negative or positive impact on the quality and rate of success of relationships and marriages?
Have you experienced problems in a relationship due to online flirting or “sexting”? Were you the one engaging in inappropriate contact or was it your SO?
In what ways do you protect your relationship/marriage from being affected by such things?
***They were talking about all of this on the radio this morning and I am curious about how you all feel about it. Text messaging and social networking seemed to explode around the same time, I was around 18 years old and just entering a relationship (with my now husband). In the beginning, there was all sorts of mini-dramas, but I guess that’s to be expected when you’re young and dumb and in love…but I definitely think Facebook and texting made certain situations worse. (Notice how I say it made things worse, it wasn’t the root cause of our problems, I know we are responsible.)

Every generation thinks they have come up with something *new*. I’m sure the telephone ’caused problems’. Maybe even the postal service ’caused problems’ with writing letters inappropriately. Email, cellular phones, pagers – all of these may have ’caused problems’ when they first came out.
